Weekend Intensive with Angela Kukhahn

Join Angela for a Weekend Intensive focused on cultivating strength, courage and confidence on the mat. Angela’s love for yoga began in 2003 after she refused surgery following an awful car accident that damaged both of her knees. Fortunately, fate had it that she stumbled upon a beautiful studio called the Adiaya Yoga Sanctuary where she met her compassionate teachers Dy Tysen and Rachel Sellars. Yoga healed her broken knees and sparked a fire inside of her. The flame was lit and she knew she wanted to teach! She completed her first 200hr teacher training with Yogaworks in New York City. She then migrated to sunny Los Angeles to study under the brilliant Annie Carpenter. After completing the 6 month mentorship program at Yogaworks she spent a month in Sydney, Australia as Annie’s teaching assistant. Annie’s alignment-based style of teaching has had a profound effect upon Angela’s teaching style. Other teachers that continue to shape Angela’s teaching include Brock and Krista Cahill, Vinnie Marino, Kathryn Budig, Dice lida-Klein, and Briohny Smyth. $40/session or $110 for all Saturday/Sunday Sessions

In this workshop we will explore inversions with a sense of adventure, curiosity and most of all fun! Inversions are for everyone and are extremely beneficial in strengthening the body and focusing the mind. Hi Yogis,

Thanks for your interest in joining Aimee Donahue and Angela Kukhahn  (Friday) July 20th-22nd (Sunday) for a memorable 2 nights and 3 days in Ojai at a stunningly beautiful, 52-acre Eco Sanctuary. The main house, an architecturally significant Craftsman Style property, is picturesque, comfortable and relaxing. The land overlooks Ojai and features mango, lemon and orange trees, a big ceremonial fire circle, hiking trails, a large oval pool and a Jacuzzi. The large free-standing yoga studio features huge east-facing picture windows with a breathtaking view and a dark wood floor.

There will be a yoga class on Friday, 2 classes on Saturday and a final class on Sunday morning. Each class will be two hours. Delicious vegetarian food is provided at all meals and there will be plenty of time to hike, swim, read or just plain relax.

Please see below for the inclusive prices based on your room choice. Cost per person includes lodging for 3 days and 2 nights, all meals, all classes and events. All lodging is first come first served. Single spaces are available for an additional fee. There is a variety of accommodations and the retreat fee is based, in part, on the type of accommodation that you pick.

Have you ever noticed that with a little assistance you can often go deeper and get more enjoyment out of most yoga poses? If so, you have already experienced the benefits of partner yoga. Making friends in yoga class has many advantages outside of just having a friend to spot you in a handstand kickup in the center of the room however, it’s just plain FUN! Join Angela Kukhahn and Aimee’ Donahue for a memorable night of yoga, play, and a chance to get to know your fellow yogis a little bit better. This class is ALL levels and is part yoga class, part mixer. Come alone or bring a friend, doesn’t really matter as there will be a lot of mixing! Doing yoga poses with a partner can be a little uncomfortable at first, but also can be a great way to deepen your poses and your connection to others. Come with an open mind and a sense of play!

10 Reasons You Should Smile For Your Health

Ever see someone who’s face reads “Please check your cheerfulness at the door”? Deep frown lines, eyes that bore holes when they look at you, and a face that would make the Grinch squirm?

So how does one end up waking up one morning with a face that growls at everyone it meets?  I must admit I have always been a little afraid that I might cross the line of crankiness and wakeup looking like a grouch. So far so good.

I often smile at strangers when passing on the street. It’s the small town girl in me, I can’t help it. When I’m lucky they grin back. Sometimes however they’ll shoot me a look that says they’d rather pull a hamstring than smile back. It’s as if they are genuinely pissed off that someone has the nerves to smile at them. Other times they observe me as if I am an alien life form come to invade their angry planet. And of course there are ones who only manage to curl up one side of their mouth. Sure, it’s technically a sneer, but I imagine it  is a smile trying to get out.

So what’s my yogic point here? Smiling is important, it’s basically yoga for your face. Those cheeks need a grin like your leg muscles need downward dog. Studies show that there are many mental, emotional and social benefits from smiling. It reduces stress, makes you happier, and makes the opposite sex find you more attractive. (Go gettem’ tiger!)

A few more smile motivating facts..

  1. If you can’t smile at least try not to frown. Studies show that adults who get Botox for their frown lines report feeling less depression after the procedure. I am not suggesting you go get botox, but there is clearly a mind-face connection at work.
  2. Smiles are more attractive than makeup: A recent studies show that 69% of people find women more attractive when they smile than when they are wearing makeup.
  3. Smiling makes you memorable. You are 3 time more likely to remember the person that is smiling over the one that is wearing a negative or neutral expression.
  4. Smiling improves the way others see you.  72% of people think of those who smile often as being more confident and successful.
  5. Smiling helps You make new friends. 86% of people say that they are more likely to strike up conversations with strangers if they are smiling.
  6. Even a fake smile will lift your mood.  Your body releases endorphins Serotonin, Dopamine and Morphine when you smile. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that reduces fear and worry. Dopamine squashes negative emotions. Morphine is a powerful pain-killer. Enjoy the natural high!
  7. Smiling at others is a way to show Ahimsa (non-violence). A smile is a non-verbal way to communicate non-violence. Scientists have found that smiles reduce aggression in both the giver and the receiver.
  8. Smiling makes you healthier. Smiling activates the central nervous System and boosts your immune system. It lowers your blood pressure, regulates your heartbeat, and enhances respiration. Those lil’ guys the white blood cells (Leukocytes) activate as well! They are on the front lines attacking foreign bacteria, viruses, and toxins keeping you disease free!
  9. Fake smiling can lead to genuine smiling and real happiness. Fake smile for 20 seconds for seven (7) days, and it creates a neural pathway in your brain.Continue for 21 consecutive days and fake smiling becomes hardwired into your brain becoming a genuine smile!
  10. Happy people live 9 years longer than unhappy ones.

Yoga Inspiration ~ Never Stop Lifting!

“Never Stop Lifting!” is the advice my teacher Krista Cahill gave me what felt like a million times as I attempted (and failed) at this seemingly impossible transition from Crow Pose (Bakasana) to Handstand.

Physically its all about shifting your weight forward by moving your pelvis up and forward and bringing your knees towards your chest.

Mentally it is all about never giving up, even when something looks and feels impossible!

This transition serves as a great reminder to never ever, ever give up!
